With the countdown to the wedding in full effect we are tying up all the loose ends. Trying not to panic haha.

I started the morning by sewing beads onto my beautiful Mori Lee wedding gown. It was a floor sample so it needed some love. No pics because the dress is a surprise to Ryan. I tried it on again and felt beautiful. Something that was lacking with the others I bought. In other dress news, I sold the second J Crew dress to a super nice pregnant bride to be for what I bought it for. So glad I was able to sell the first 2 dresses and didn’t lose any money. Whoop!
Ryan and I took off to Nordstrom Rack and he found a Penguin belt that matched his Cole Haan shoes perfectly. He also bought his wedding bow tie (Penguin). It looks great with his navy Kenneth Cole suit. Thank you Nordstrom Rack for having great deals on man sizes. *Ryan says to leave the brands out of it but I’m documenting as much detail as possible as a reference. So there Ryan!

Next stop was Crate and Barrel where we did some exchanging. After was Cinderella Bakery to see if the size of the cake would fit on the cake stand inside the bird cage. The 7″ will fit perfectly! Hooray!!! The cakes there were amazing!
We headed to growers direct and trader joes to get the ingredients for pesto and chimichurri. We tested out the food processor that the Stanley family gave us. We logged the recipes in the Stanley cook book Carina gave us at my bridal shower.

I also figured out the “ring pillow” alternative. We have a bird theme so I thought it would be cute to have Jake walk up with a vintage bird cage with our rings inside it.

We got dressed in our Sunday best for Mother’s day at the Selke’s. Teri brought a bunch of family pictures to go through. We found a bunch of cute ones to use for the slideshow and vintage ones to print.

Ryan had the cutest idea to have a Christmas eve breakfast picnic. So he made coffee (from alta) to go and we went to super pollo and made our way to back bay. It was a perfect morning!

OUR first Christmas tree!

This is Ryan and my first holiday living together. I am a huge holiday freak so of course we HAD to get a tree the weekend following Thanksgiving.

Ooooohhh speaking of Thanksgiving, I’m going to digress for a moment. After much convincing, we ended up in Palm Desert at the Pitt’s home away from home. The weather was perfect, the food was great, and my fave was the introduction of our families. My grandparents drove down from Desert Center to meet the Stanley, Pitt, Woodall, and Gainards. They were welcomed with smiles and hugs. Everyone got along beautifully! It was the perfect Thanksgiving. The following day they all played golf while Kathleen, Scott, Nikki, and I lounged at the pool at the Riveria.

Ok, back to the tree! Ryan and I snagged a fine looking Douglas Fir. We put it up and put on the lights… I know typical tree stuff.

But the best part was putting on the ornaments. My grandma Reva passed last year (October 2010). She made ornaments called snow babies. Every year I’d get a new set. Even Ryan has his own with his name and date on the bottom. I also received these two Christmas porcelain dolls.

Also, Ryan and I started a tradition to get an ornament on every trip. We’ve never been able to put them up before. It was a lot of fun finding forgotten ornaments and reminiscing. The apple is from our recent trip to Oak Glen when we picked up our apples for our wedding apple pies.

I love that our tree is mix and match of meaningful ornaments. I love it!!! Ryan keeps reading me bc I keep glancing at it and smiling. *sigh

Engagement pics: attire

Now that we know where we went to take the pics, we wanted the appropriate digs to go along.

I wanted a long, light colored, vintage, whimsical dress. Ive been on a one year no clothes buying commitment. Im about 6 months in. I have a gray area and that is wedding clothes. So you can imagine my excitement to look for dresses. I’ve been hitting up vintage and thrift shops frequently. And I found this gem (picture below)! It was everything I had hoped for and my size! Hooray! I found some used lace and navy blue shoes that go with the new navy blue and gray shoes Ryan got at Nordstrom. I also ordered a vintage blue step stool. I want to use it to be funny in our engagement pics because I’m such a dwarf next to Ryan. I can’t wait!

Scouting for engagement pic locations

Ryan and I are so excited to have our photographer, Valerie Wheeler, fly in from Utah to do our engagement pictures. She will be here at the end of June. I want to make sure we have places picked out so we can make the best use of her time.

Everyday I take the 405s to work and drive by a beautiful open space in Irvine. Ryan and I went there to check it out.

After we went To Foothill Ranch and drove down to O’Neal park. You cam camp and hike there. I thought it would make for some adorable rustic pictures.

How Ry popped the question

I must start by saying Ryan is a very romantic guy. He leaves me love notes all the time, plans surprise scavenger hunts for me, and never ceases to amaze me with the thoughtful things he does. So knowing his track record I assumed he would propose in an extremely romantic way. We had been talking about marriage and  had gone ring shopping so I knew it was coming. We had a trip planned for Tahoe from Christmas day to New Year’s day with his sister, her husband, and several friends. Tahoe is a magical place around that time so I was thinking he may propose there. I would have NEVER expected him to propose the way he did.

It was Christmas Eve and we headed up to Los Angeles from Orange County. Ryan asked if we could go check out the lights on candy cane lane but I told him I didn’t think we had time. Then he suggested that we go ice skating since we were in the valley. I told him it wouldn’t be possible today. We had loads to do. We running errands and also had people to see. My cousin was in town from San Francisco, so we visited him. My old roommate was in a horrible car accident so we went to visit her and give her some new Miami J collars. I wasn’t feeling well and had cramps and I was in a bummed mood from seeing Stephanie broken and bruised. We had one of my best friend’s, Mark Gonzales, Christmas parties to go to. It’s a tradition that his family throws every year and all his family and friends attend.
Ryan and I stopped at a Ralph’s grocery store so I could get Midol and snag beer to bring to the party. Ryan chose a parking spot under a street light and to the side of the store. I teased him about parking far away from the entrance when there were tons of close parking spots. Ryan was acting strange but I didn’t think much about it. So we walked out of the store and to the car. Ryan opened my door like usual and I got in and put on my seat belt. He opened his trunk and just stood back there. I was wondering what was taking so long. Ryan came back to my door and opened it and got on one knee. I was completely shocked! I can’t remember exactly what he said. I do remember saying, “NOT IN THE RALPH’S PARKING LOT!!!!” Ryan said something to the effect that he wants to spend this and every Christmas together for the rest of our lives.   I said yes of course and tried to get out to hug him but I forgot I had my seat belt on. Good grief, this engagement was awkward, unexpected, and ridiculous. But I wouldn’t have it any other way. I asked him why he chose the Ralph’s parking lot. Ryan said he wanted to surprise me and he knew if he did something romantic I would know. That’s why he parked under a light in a secluded area. He wanted me to be able to see the ring. Ryan said that he had the ring in his pocket all day and was waiting for the right time to really surprise me.  He added that I looked like I had been punched in the stomach. haha

We headed to Mark’s house and we told him the news. He kept saying,” No way, is this a joke!? Are you serious? Tell me the truth!” I was excited before but then to see Mark’s reaction made me get giddy. Mark was yelling and telling everyone there. It was a bit overwhelming and everyone was asking us the normal questions. It ended up being a Christmas/engagement party. Ryan’s Ralph’s parking lot engagement ended up being the perfect time because we got to immediately celebrate! I don’t think we will do an engagement party. I truly feel like we already had one. It was full of love, laughter, toasts, and the magic of Christmas.

Mark was a great host as usual and kept doing engagement toasts. We must have done a dozen champagne toasts.

We ended the night and went to Ryan’s parent’s house and we got to hang out with Ryan’s little sisters for a bit before ending our long Christmas Eve. I felt a bit groggy from all the champagne toasts but it was great to wake up Christmas morning as Ryan’s fiance. 🙂
